Customs and Taboos
1. Bargaining for ANYTHING is the way to go. Considering that haggling is part of life here, it only makes sense that the more you haggle, the better your business relationship will be.
2. Asking personal questions such as "how much do you earn?" "how old are you", or "how much do you weigh?" are quite acceptable questions in Vietnamese culture. They don't mind telling you how fat you look either.
3. In Western culture, picking ones nose is considered rude and disgusting, but not in Vietnam. So don't be alarmed when you're chatting to someone and they suddenly pop their finger in their nostril.
4. Vietnamese are extremely superstitious. Photographing groups of 3 people are considered unlucky and the first person to visit your stall/shop in the morning is supposed to hold the luck for the day's income.
5. It is polite to remove your shoes upon entering someone’s home, but not necessary upon entering someone's shop.
Health Care
Health issues and the quality of medical facilities vary enormously depending on where and how you travel in Vietnam. Many of the major cities are now very well developed, although travel to rural areas can expose you to a variety of health risks and inadequate medical care. You should always drink bottled water, and do not eat raw vegetables and unpeeled fruits.
Toilet items should also be carried in sufficient quantity for the entire visit unless their availability at the travel destination is assured.
