One Pillar Pagoda

As a historic Buddhist temple in Hanoi, One Pillar Pagoda is regarded alongside the Perfume Temple, as one of Vietnam's two most iconic temples. Located in the western part of the city, near Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum in Hanoi, One Pillar Pagoda, built of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25m in diameter, is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, a Buddhist symbol of purity, rising out of a sea of sorrow. In 1954, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam after the First Indochina War. It was rebuilt afterwards by the new government.

The pagoda is open daily from 08:00 am to 05:00 p.m. Entrance is free.
