Shwezigon Pagoda

The Shwezigon Pagoda or Shwezigon Paya, is regarded as the most significant shrine in Bagan people's heart. The pagoda is standing between the village of Wetkyi-in and Nyaung U. It is believed that the pagoda was built to enshrine one of the four replicas of the Buddha’s tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The construction was started in 1102 AD by King Anawrahta, and was completed in the regime of King Kyanzittha.

For most people, they believe a old saying that if one visit all four tooth replicas in a day, it can bring one prosperity and luck. Shwezigon Pagoda is also famous for its graceful bell shape which has been the prototype for virtually all later stupas around Myanmar (Burma).

Lit up impressively at night, the gilded pagoda stands on three rising terraces. The most important site in Shwezigon Pagoda is the small yellow compound named 37 Nat housing 37 pre-Buddhist nat figures that were endorsed by Bamar monarchy in a compromising gesture to a public reluctant to give up all their briefs for Buddhism.
