Nanpaya Temple

Nanpaya Temple is a Hindu temple located in the south of Bagan built by Mon King Manuha and used as his residence. It is famous for its interior masonry work – sandstone block facing over a brick core, certainly some of Bagan’s finest detailed sculpture. 

Nanpaya Temple contains intricate carvings of Brahma, illustrations of other Hindu gods, Mon’s figures and symbols, etc. In the central sanctuary the four stone pillars have finely carved sandstone bas-relief figures of the three-faced Brahma. The creator deity is holding lotus flowers, considered to be offerings to a freestanding Buddha image once situated in the shrine’s center. 

The sides of the pillars feature ogrelike kala-ate heads with open mouths streaming with flowers. In the center of the four pillars is an altar, on which once stood a standing Buddha or a Hindu god.
