Srah Srang

Srah Srang is a baray (man-made reservoir) at Angkor, measuring 700m by 350m. It is famous for the spectacular sunset view on the surface of the lake in the background of endless horizon.

Situate in the east of Banteay Kdei and the south of the East Baray on the same horizontal line, Srah Srang was dug in the 10th century, by initiative of Kavindrarimathana, Buddhist minister of Rajendravarman II.

Nowadays Srah Srang is still partially flooded. The landing-stage, added around the year 1200 by Jayavarman VII, stands opposite the entrance to Banteay Kdei. It is a popular site for viewing the sunrise. The steps that lead down to the water are flanked by two guardian lions.
